Hospital Meals with CKD: What to Ask For and How to Work the Tray
20 foods rated from this table
What to know about hospital food with CKD
Hospital trays are built around short-order menus with more salt, thicker sauces and larger portions than the ratings on this site assume. The three limits still apply — phosphorus 1,000 mg, sodium 2,000 mg and potassium 2,000 mg per day — and the patient or family can usually request plain versions of the same items. The ratings below show which tray staples stay manageable.
How to work with the tray
Ask the kitchen for grilled or plain protein, sauce and gravy on the side, vegetables without added salt, and water instead of soda or juice. Most hospital kitchens will adjust an order when asked — the request is routine, not special.
